It’s Finally Here: The iPhone 5S
The iPhone 5S is the next generation iPhone. And of course it’s faster, better and even smarter than it’s predecessor. But with every iPhone comes a killer feature. Something the other phone will never have. With the iPhone 3GS is was speed and voice commands, with the 4S is was Siri and with the iPhone 5S it’s a smart home button. Read on for much more details after the break.
Customers will have three color options: Slate, Gold, and Silver. The phone is made of high-grade aluminum, with chamfered edges.
A7 Processor
The new system-on-a-chip A7 processor is still a dual-core processor, but is much more power efficient. It’s the world’s first 64-bit chip in a smartphone ever. It’s also enhanced to make the new animations in iOS 7 run much smoother, because iOS 7 apparently runs in 64-bit as well. Chip specs: 64-bit desktop architecture. 2x general purpose registers. Over one billion transistors. It runs OpenGL|ES 3.0.
M7 Processor
A new part, the M7. It works alongside the A7. It’s a “motion co-processor.” It measures the accelerometer, compass, and gyroscope. It can tell apps if you’re stationary, walking, driving, etc.
Battery
3G talk time: 10 hours. 10 Hours LTE browsing. Up to 250 hours of standby. Schiller says it’s better than the iPhone 5.
Camera
Apple usually updates the iPhone’s camera with a better lens and more megapixels. The iPhone 5S however, still houses an 8 megapixel camera (the same a in the iPhone 5). This year Apple decided to enhance the led flash. The sensor has a 15 percent larger active area. The lens is a new, five-element Apple-designed lens with an F2.2 aperture. Other features: Auto image stabilization, the pixels are 1.5 microns, the aperture is f2.2, burst mode (10 frames per second). It captures HD video at 720p at 120FPS. That’s gonna be a cool feature I guess. The camera’s dual led flash allows for much improved photos, especially in low light environments.
Home Button
For the first time ever, the iPhone sees an update for its home button. Apple added the so called Touch ID technology. Instead of securing your phone with a 4-digit passcode (or a longer, more complex one), users can now secure their phone with their fingerprint. The Touch ID Sensor details: It’s 170 microns thin, senses 500 ppi, scans your sub-epidermal skin layers. Phil Schiller said: “You can simply touch your home button to unlock your phone.” You can also scan your fingerprint to do stuff in apps, like authenticate the App Store for buying apps.
