Free games with ads need more power form the battery than games without ads. A new study by IT scientist, Abhinav Pathak, from Purdue University proofs this. At least 75% of the energy needs of an app are used for downloading ads and collecting user data.

A certain app can drain your battery in 90 minutes, says Pathak. He mainly looked at Android-apps, but it’s likely the same goes for iPhone apps. Apps that were tested during this study are Angry Birds Free, Chess and NYTimes. Only 10 to 30 percent was needed for the app’s core functionality.
