Rejected
Apple rejected a new app from the App Store. You probably think that’s nothing new, but the reason for rejecting this app from the App Store is one we have not seen before. Apple rejected a update for the application Read It Later because, “they require customers to register with personal information without providing account-based features”. What does this actually mean and why is it not allowed by Apple? Luckily Apple send Weiner “the creator of the app” a email “after the break” with a little more explanation.

Hello Nathan,

Thank you for submitting Read It Later Free & Read It Later to the App Store.

We’ve reviewed your apps, but cannot post these versions to the App Store because they require customers to register with personal information without providing account-based features. We have included additional details below to help explain the issue, and hope you’ll consider revising and resubmitting your application.

Applications cannot require user registration prior to allowing access to app features and content; such user registration must be optional and tied to account-based functionality.

If you have any questions about this response, or would like to discuss it further, please feel free to reply to this email. We look forward to reviewing your revised apps.

Best Regards,

After reading this email from Apple you probably still don’t know what Apple is trying to say, first apple said they rejected the app “because they require customers to register with personal information without providing account-based features” a little later they say “Applications cannot require user registration prior to allowing access to app features and content; such user registration must be optional and tied to account-based functionality.” That’s pretty confusing.

Weiner said Read It Later is just a little application that requires you to register and actually does not “collect personal information”, all you need to do is fill in you username and password. This shouldn’t be a problem because this registration is “providing account-based features”.

Its still pretty confusing and a lot of people just think this is a little mistake made by Apple. To read Weiner his story check out his blog post.
