Review: “Voiis” The Wireless Music Gateway For The iPhone
Ever wanted to be able to start music no matter where you are at home? Imagine this: you come home and you’re walking to the door to enter your house. While you’re walking you take your iPhone and press the play button of the iPod controls. When you enter your house, you suddenly hear the music you just started. But the sound doesn’t come through the iPhone speakers, it comes from your stereo.
First impression:
The box shows the Voiis in full display. When opening the box the Voiis is easily removed. The Voiis feels good and sturdy. On the bottom is a rubber strip to keep the Voiis on one place. At the back are a couple of connection points; a 3.5 mm headphones connector (in), a 3.5 mm headphones connector (out) and one mini USB and Power connector for the power input. At the front the name of the device can clearly be seen. There’s also a couple of logos, like a Bluetooth logo and the logos for a headset and audio. The logos have little indicator lights to show if the Voiis is currently using Bluetooth and if it is connected with a headset or not. Besides the logos you can see a Function button. So far the device is very clear and de design is elegant and stylish.
Accessories:
Provided with the Voiis are the following materials:
- a power adapter
- audio y-cable (in/out)
- 3.5 mm audio cable (in/out)
- a manual
How to use:
The device setup is pretty easy. Simply attach the gateway to a power source, and hook up the audio cables to the input/output of your home stereo. If you want to transmit music from your home stereo to a stereo Bluetooth headset, you’ll have to press down the Function button for 3 seconds to put it into Music Transmit mode, which activates the Bluetooth pairing. Now you’ll have to put your stereo Bluetooth headset in pairing mode, as well. This is where things can get a little tricky–you have to be sure to put both devices in pairing mode at around the same time, and since there’s no display anywhere, you won’t know if the devices are paired until you try it out.
If you press the Function button for 8 seconds, the Gateway will then switch to Music Receive mode. In this mode, the Voiis will stream music from a source (like a PC or a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone/music player) to the home stereo. We tested this with our iPhone 3GS and it worked flawlessly. On your iPhone go to Settings, General and press Bluetooth. Check if the Bluetooth is switched on. When activated the iPhone should start searching for other Bluetooth devices. It should find the Voiis. Tap on Voiis so your iPhone will connect with it. After a couple of seconds both devices are paired. Although the Voiis doesn’t show if it is connected or not, the iPhone can give you that confirmation. That’s all there’s to it. It’s very easy, everybody can do it.
Missing things?:
Although some people might find it a little awkward to have only one button for both the Transmit mode and the Receive mode, we think it adds to the simplicity of the device. Just hold the button for 3 or 8 seconds and activate the required mode. Also, having a remote control for what is clearly a home entertainment device would have been a nice touch.
Conclusion:
The device looks beautiful and light. The design is very nice and is something you don’t have to hide behind the television or something like that. It can be displayed in full view. It comes view clear instructions and enough accessories. However, a remote control would have been a nice addition. Overall, it’s very simple to set the device up and to listen to you music over Bluetooth. Very handy.
