In regards to email, Gizmodo is reporting that the iPhone won’t fetch email while in sleep mode. A reader has confirmed that Apple has this as a “known problem,” and hopefully a fix is on the way. For those worried about battery life, this problem may not be bad.

The issue exists when the iPhone goes into sleep mode. When this occurs, the iPhone will stop fetching new email.

This problem occurs with the 2.1 firmware and is documented in the Apple support forums.

You mean this is the first they’ve acknowledged this problem? This was happening way back in 1.1.4 but no one seemed to have any idea on how to fix it.

That’s odd, I swear it works on my iPhone. I have the status notification activated and it takes some time to display the mail icon, and I set the fetch interval to 1 hour. When I wake up and click the home button I see the mail icon, so it has to be done while I was sleeping (me, not the iPhone… hehe).

When I used the iPod touch (with the same firmware) sometimes the new mail sound (which is much louder and different than iPhone’s) woke me up.

Another thing that I’ve noticed is that the iPhone uses my WiFi network instead of edge when doing these checks (verified by checking the usage on settings).

Oh, I still get my emails in sleep mode sometimes, it’s a pretty random problem.
