Sipgate is another VoIP client for your iPhone much like Fring but then again not quite. The difference between Sipgate is the fact that you can call any number directly from the app without have extra accounts. So to use this app, you won’t need a skype or any other subscription based service. You can use sipgate to place and receive calls over Wi-Fi using any SIP-based VoIP-service. And the best off all is the fact that you receive 111 minutes for free.

The team behind sipgate seems to be a bunch of very cool guys. I do recommend that you read the faq before or after signing up, especially the part of your unborn.. :)

Overall the app is not bad i tested it but it lacks some features. It’s not possible to adjust the volume and you have no address book.

You can signup for free here.

1) Locate and install the app.

2) Start the app. After you agreed the license, you will see authentication failed. Just tap the configure account fill in your usernam(number) and password, and you’ll be ready to place 111 minutes of free calls.

This little app is available in the Installer.app through the Sipgate packaging source, see our sources page.

Just downloaded and tried this at work with my existing sipgate account, and it doesn’t work, but I suspect that that’s because my work’s wifi network has the necessary ports blocked. I’ll give it a whirl at home. It’s a great idea, but it it doesn’t work at work, then I can’t imagine being somewhere with free and open wifi access when I’d actually want to use it.

Yep, I’ve tried from home and it’s still not working. Mine just goes to calling, but never makes the call and no dial tone. I suspect it’s the app… I can’t believe it wouldn’t work with pre-existing accounts. I’ve had mine for over two years now.
