Macrumors received some photos showing what is claimed to be the battery of the upcoming iPad Mini. The photos show that the battery runs at 3.72 volts, offering 16.7 Whr of energy on 4490 mAh of charge. It also shows the model number “A1445” and Apple part number “616-0641”. AllThingsD and LoopInsight report that Apple is planning to hold a media event on Tuesday, October 23 to introduce Apple’s 7.85 inches “iPad mini”.

As AllThingsD reported in August, Apple will hold a special event this month at which it will showcase a new, smaller iPad. People familiar with Apple’s plans tell us that the company will unveil the so-called “iPad mini” on October 23 at an invitation-only event.

That’s a Tuesday, not a Wednesday, so this is a bit of a break with recent tradition. It also happens to be just three days prior to the street date for Microsoft’s new Surface tablet.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has started “mass production of a new tablet computer smaller than the current iPad”.

Apple Inc.’s Asian component suppliers have started mass production of a new tablet computer smaller than the current iPad, people with knowledge of the situation said, as the Silicon Valley company tries to stay competitive against rivals such as Google Inc. GOOG -0.63% and Amazon.com Inc. AMZN -0.56% that are offering smaller, less-expensive alternatives to the iPad.

Earlier today we wrote that Foxconn in Brazil has begun production on the forthcoming “iPad mini”. Now a report from Philip Elmer-DeWitt noted that Apple could be sending out invitations to the launch event for the iPad mini on October 10.
