So you have bought your new iPhone and you have heard that you can do much cool things with your iPhone.
But you’ve heard so much things about jailbreaking and unlocking and activating and you simply don’t know where to start anymore.
Well this guide is for you all the beginners. If you have a iPhone 3G or you run firmware 2.0 please check THIIS post !!!
I’m going to explain what jailbreaking, unlocking and activating is. I will also briefly mention the apptap installer and some other things.
Ok let’s go.
1) Activate
A new iPhone without activation is actually nothing more than a nice looking Brick.
You really can’t use it for anything else then call for emergency.
Here comes the activation in place.
It opens your iPhone up for normal operation.
To do this, yo should connect your new iPhone to iTunes so you can officialy activate with AT&T (in the US) and other carriers around the world.
If you chose to activate your phone without doing this the iTunes way, you actually make a very expensive iPod of your iPhone.
In most cases we don’t want to do this so i haven’t created a separate guide for this. Please check the jailbreak or unlock and jailbreak guides.
2) Jailbreak
So what’s jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod touch?
Jailbreaking is the process of gaining access to the iPhone’s root filesystem, this will allow you to install third-party applications on your device.
Why do you want to do this?
If you jailbreak with our guide, a whole new world of iPhoning or iPodding will open up to you, you will be able to install load’s of free customer made games and applications.
If you follow our guide, your iPhone or iPod Touch will be jailbroken and the defacto Apptap installer(where all new app’s will be available) and Cydia installer will be installed onto your device.

3) Unlock
What is unlocking?
Unlocking is the process opening up your iPhone for any GSM sim card.
Apple has limited the use of the iPhone to a select few wireless carriers (eg AT&T, Tmobile,etc).

4) Jailbreak + Unlock

5) Pwn your device
What is pwning?
Pwning your iPhone is the process of making your iPhone or iPod Touch run any firmware you like, this includes the beta firmwares or a custom made firmware with your own bootloader images and software already installed.

Does Jailbreaking void your warranty on your ipod/iphone?
Yes if voids your warranty. However if you restore to your default Apple will never know. :)

I am not a rookie…I have been using installer for the past 7-8 months and it has been working good for me….My quetion is which installer or Cydia installer is better???
I tried to use Cydia installer I am not famailiar with it and I had hard time to figure out how to update sources and I could not find nothing as far as other apps from installer…Would please help me?

i need help, i bought the new iphone3g and am trying to unlock it using liberty. While its trying to go into recovery mode it keeps disconnecting i keep trying and nothing…am i supposed to do all this w the at&t sim card inside?

the iLiberty Process is only for firmware 1.1.4 and not the new iPhone 3G. As of today there’s still no unlock ready for the iPhone 3G. If you would like to jailbreak your iPhone 3G, then i would recommend to check out the new post on how to WinPwn your iPhone 3G.

iLiberty no longer works on firmware 2.0.
You will need to use the WinPwn or PwnageTool to get firmware 2.0.1.
If you don’t want to pwn your firmware yourself you can download a pre-made one from http://thepiratebay.org <– just search for firmware 2.0.1 and you will find it.

Just one more question, I realized that i have the iPhone with tmobile, so when i use WinPwn i need to click on the You tube activation and Activate my phone am i right?
Also is it worth upgrading firmware from 1.1.4 to 2.0?

Using winpwn 2.0.0.4 I tried many times to create a custom 2.0.1_5B108 ISPW. Once my device was in DFU mode I shift-click restore and iTunes would start the restore process and after extracting the software it would get to “preparing ipod†stage and then stop with “An unknown error accrued (6)†message. I also tried creating a custom 2.0_5A347 but itunes gave me the same message. I restored to an original ISPW and then switched to my mac using pwange 2.0.2 and it worked like a dream:) Tx dev-team.
P.S. (use macs to hack I could have saved 2h that way)

Dude, I got that error message many times myself. Look at the post above to see what worked for me.
Or you can use QuickPwnGUI120 That worked like a charm for me on windows.

I has bought an iPhone with cancellation payment (100 Euro) in Orange France, and now need some help to unlock it. Unfortunately I already leave France and can’t get the unlock code via regular mail.
I have already pass the “charge call” procedure #124*secret code# 5 days ago, but there no any unlock codes back to me. How many time does it take to recive mail (or what) to get SIM-free phone? Who knows? What should I do, step by step? Please.

It was done!
After call in Orange, wait (for nothing) 5-6 days (they have told adout 2 days). There NO any e-mails after it, just restore yours iPhone in iTunes 1-st with Orange SIM, then with new. Thats all, for me it works ok.
Guys, I got alive again my iphone. Only to do is power off, press home button, iphone status now is in recovery mode, the itunes discovery it in this mode. Then it possible do a restore. It’s all.
Other point to consider, when it’s restored, the baseband was locked. With utility BootNeuter 2.10 in the iphone (install from Cydia). It get the version’s baseband, choose Unlock and Neuter. That’s all. And the carrier is recognized again.

I Recently unlocked my fone using winpwn, the fone works fine now with firmware 2.0.2, but for some reason i am not able to find BSD Subsytem in Cydia, or in Installer.
How do i get BSD Subsystem Now,… I know that it is very important… i really dont want to restore the fone again and unlock it

I’m in China and just got myself a 3G. It was working fine until I plug it in to my computer and within ten minutes have turned it into a pretty brick by updating. The shop says they will replace so I’m thinking to myself “Thank Granny’s panties for that!”. I don’t speak the local lingo that well and the shop assistant doesn’t speak the old Eeeenglish.
Can someone please tell me:
1) If I plug the new iphone into my sooped up calculator, will itunes automatically update it again?
2) Can I use itunes to sync without updating? Can I download stuff from itunes without having to update?
3) If I jailbreak etc on a 3G, is there any different course of action that I have to take compared to an earlier generation
4) If I use windows instead of a Mac, is there anything else I need to be aware.
5) What size nappy does it need and how often should I burp it? How do I know if I’m an unfit parent?

Hi.I had my phone about a year ago running 1.1.4 .I unlock it using Ziphone and all is well until last week when I decided to upgrade to 2.2.1 to avail the Appstore.Big mistake.I tried to jailbreak it using QuickPwn 2.2.1 but the phone will shut down when it gets to the step where you have to press home and power for 10 sec.Itshuts down at the 5 sec mark.I tried to go back to 1.1.4 but Itunes is reporting error.I can restore it to 2.0 up to 2.2.1 but QuickPwn will not work as stated above.Now its just a nice looking paperweight.Any help will be appreciated.
Just do the process again as the first Gen. iphone has no special treatment. Restore in itunes to 2.2.1 and jailbreak again. Cheers

If I jailbreak my iPhone, will it mess up any firmware on there? Will I still be able to use the internet/make calls/use the app store? Also, Will it suddenly open it up to viruses?
If you do it correctly there will be no problem, internet/calls/app store all will do fine and it will not open up to viruses.

I haev a iPhone 4, with 4.3.3 (Jailbroken). I want to upgrade iOS to 5.0.1 and then jailbreak it again. But – I have a lot of apps that againg contains alot of information, these apps a cannot live without.
Question: Will all my apps on iOS 4.3.3 (Jailbroken) be deleted when I upgrade.?
