Robot Plays Rock Band On iPhone Emergency Charger For iPod&iPhone
Nov 02

s_logoallied_logoMonths ago, the first details showed up about EA developing Red Alert for the iPhone. Today the game finally made it to the App Store after the release date was changed from October 23rd to unknown. I bought it and played it a little bit to get some impressions and I must say the game is awesome.

The iPhone version of Red Alert looks and feels like Red Alert 3 for the PC. The graphics are stunning and by pinching the screen you can zoom in and out. The details are pretty good when you zoom in. On my iPhone 3GS the game runs very smoothly. The load time is fast as well, but could differ on previous iPhone models. I’ve not played for a very long time yet, but I have found that you can only have one saved game at a time. So when you save a chapter in story mode and want to play a skirmish game, the saved game will be lost when you try to save the skirmish mission. Hopefully we will get the option to have more memory slots through a future update, so we can save more missions.

The EA description says you can play through 12 combat levels. I think that’s a little misleading. You have two factions: The Soviets and the Allies. There are 5 chapters/levels for each faction. And there are two skirmish maps. That makes 12 so called combat levels. If you think 2 skirmish levels aren’t enough, then you can buy an additional 6 maps for $0,99 via In-App Purchase. So basically, with the extra 6 maps, you have 18 missions you can play on.

EA also announces a future update. That update promises us to deliver Wi-Fi and Bluetooth multiplayer and an expansion pack with new units, maps and story. The expansion pack is called “Empire of the Rising Sun” and offers new mission and a new faction: Japan.

In my opinion 5 chapters for each faction is not much. They could have easily added a few more missions. Also, paying 10 bucks for a game with only 2 skirmish maps and then asking for another dollar for 6 extra maps, feels like a rip-off. I can see EA asking at least 5 dollars for the expansion pack that will be available in the future. But I guess I’m a fan of the genre and I will pay it nonetheless. And ofcourse, listening to the Hell March song brings back good memories.
