red alert iphoneRed Alert was released for the PC in 1996. Thirteen years, another 2 Red Alert parts and a whole bunch of Command & Conquer games later, the extremely popular game is going to arrive on the iPhone on October 23rd.

Red Alert is a prequel of the original C&C and takes place during the 1950’s. Albert Einstein manages to create a time machine and travels back in time to erase Hitler’s existence. Without Hitler, no WW2 as we know it. Stalin’s armies of The Soviet Union can grow because Nazi Germany provides no resistance, since Hitler is gone. Stalin intends to take over Europe and Asia to become the most powerful man on Earth.

The iPhone version is a trimmed down version from its original. The game comes with an objective-based campaign for both factions. There’s a skirmish mode, but it seems there’s no multiplayer mode. Maybe in an update? Please EA? On the right side of the screen are all the buttons and menus for building your base and training units. Units can be queued up to train multiples at once. The battlefield can be zoomed by using the iPhone’s standard pinching method. You can also change your field of view by swiping your finger around the screen or by touching the mini map in the top right corner.

Building your base is as simple as the PC version. You tap on the building you want from the Build-menu and a grid appears on top of the terrain. You can then drag the building to the piece of terrain where you want the building to be built. The familiar green and red squares indicate when you can place the building.

“Once you’ve got your army built, you can organize units in to three squads assigned to the three buttons on the left hand side of the screen. To select units, you can either tap them to select individual units, or by tapping a button on the bottom left corner of the screen you can drag a selection box around units on the battlefield. From there, another button on the bottom of the screen allows you to assign your current selection of units to one of the three buttons on the left side of the screen.”

This is a gameplay video of Red Alert from TouchArcade. Sit back and watch how you can loose a Soviet mission. But above all, listen to the beautiful Hell March. Sigh…what a nostalgic feeling:
