It seems more and more people have trouble with the latest version of the iPhone firmware. Since the upgrade to OS 3.1 there’s an increased chance to find your iPhone in a state of “coma”.
Apple has a supportforum and more and more angry iPhone-users are complaining about the fact that their iPhone just stops. Apple doesn’t recognize the problem and simply acts as if the bug doesn’t even exist, but the many complaints contradict that statement. The bug even has a name: “Coma Mode”. When that happens, the touchscreen doesn’t react anymore and the control buttons are not responding as well. Only a reboot helps.
The problems seem to exist only with the iPhone 3G. Downgrading it to firmware 3.0.1 helps to solve the problems. Apple says they cannot take steps to repair the bug because it is a non-reproducable bug. But since the downgrade seems to help, it doesn’t really look like it is a hardware problem. And by the way, it is a good thing the bug doesn’t show up on the iPhone 3GS, because that device cannot be downgraded via the official way.

That happened to me two times (thus very rare), only the physical buttons worked, the touchscreen was unresponsive. The first time I had to force a reboot, on the second the iPhone came back without the need to reboot.
And I’m still using iPhone OS 3.0. I guess this bug is present but more frequent on the new release.
