Both TomTom and Navigon will come with a carkit for their iPhone navigation software. It seems Navigon tries to keep being one step ahead of TomTom. They were first to release their navigon software and they

might be the first in releasing a carkit as well. And they are considerably cheaper then TomTom. Could this have any effect on the price tags of TomTom’s navigation software?

TomTom is going to bring their carkit on the market somewhere in October. It was initially planned for a release in the summer, but TomTom claims they needed more time to deliver the highest quality available. It says so in a Question and Answer overview on their website.

14. When will the car kit be available?

The TomTom car kit availability was originally planned for this summer. But we have decided to take some extra weeks in order to deliver the highest quality on this innovative product. So, the car kit will become available this October on www.tomtom.com. Register your email address at iphone.tomtom.com and you will be one of the first to know when it is available to buy.

tomtom carkiIt’s still not clear how much the carkit is going to cost and when in October it will be available. With a GPS enhancer, the ability to charge the iPhone while it’s in the carkit, the option to reroute music from the iPhone to the internal audio system of your car and the ability to call handsfree, one can expect a high price tag.

navigon carkitThe Navigon carkit will be available somewhere in October as well and for only €40 (about $60). Keep in mind that this carkit will NOT have a GPS-chip. It will likely be able to charge the iPhone and may possess a sound enhancer. More information is not available right now. It is clear the the battle between TomTom and Navigon continues.
