startrek-translatorFastCompany posted an article about an application for the iPhone that can translate different languages. It is now build to work only with English and Arab, but it sure is a step closer to one of those Star Trek translator devices.

Sakhr Mobile and Dial Directions developed this app which they call “Field Translator Beta”. You can translate realtime spoken messages from English to Arab or the other way around. You don’t need to type any text because the application works with speach recognition. It just scans the spoken words and immediately translates it. Talking to each other will be a matter of looking at the screen.

Sakhr worked for the American Defense, Justice and Homeland Security, so is not your ordinairy man. The application shown in the video below is the first iPhone product of Sakhr. Compared to the Google Translator this app is one big step forward.
