BoyGenius found a high-frequency tone emitting from the iPhone 3GS, which is probably a software related problem. Here’s what they say:
“Are you enjoying your brand new iPhone 3G S? Did you get a 16GB or a 32GB? Well, that won’t matter if people are experiencing what we are. There seems to be a problem with sound files on the 3G S and the result after they’re triggered. After they are done playing — like the unlock sound, SMS sound, for instance — the iPhone emits a high-frequency tone. No, we’re not kidding. Something pretty high around 15KHz. We’ve confirmed this isn’t a local isolated issue with our phone, and since some people can’t hear these types of high-pitched tones, your iPhone might produce it yet you’d never notice.
We’re 99% sure it’s software related because if you set the phone to vibrate, big surprise, no high-pitched tone. So, anyone out there experiencing this? It’s amazing this was skipped over in the many reviews published, but oh well. Hopefully Apple fixes it soon because this is kind of painful and pretty outrageous. Hit us up and let us know!”

I’ve had my 3G S since Friday when it came FedEx. I haven’t noticed the high pitch sound. But like it says above I just might not be able to hear it. The phone seems fine otherwise. I got the 32GB black version. I love it so far. It’s much faster, plays games great and no crashes. I notice that like the previous model the backgrounded default apps Safari, Mail and the iPod app stay open in the background. While those apps are open I experience no slowdown. I even played Real Racing WITH those apps open in the background and it was smooth with no slowdown. So, my experience so far is A+++. I am actually happy with this iPhone so far! I hope I don’t start hearing a high pitch tone…
I’ve noticed but you gotta really listen for it. The easiest way to hear it is open the iPhone, then hit the power button to lock the phone. While you do this, put the iphone’s speaker (bottom left) to your ear. You will definitely hear it for a second or two. Weird.
u are sooo right.

I hadn’t noticed… but now that Joel has told me I’ve had a listen and it is there… but it really isn’t loud enough to bother me.
Yeah. On the 3G model running the 3.0 firmware you’ll hear just a slight “shush” sound for about 4 seconds but the 3GS model is a definite high pitch tone for that same time span. It’s true that under normal conditions, it’s difficult to hear. You really gotta listen for it. Still, I’m sure that apple will address it.
I have the 16GB black and I have the tone :(
The most annoying thing is that it bleeds into teh video and audio recordings. I hope this gets fixed with a software update soon. The other frustrating thing is that there seems to be a growing number of these that are having the problem so the question is does every handset have it and only some of us can pick up the pitch or are there some that don’t ?
Of those that have traded out there units it seems to be hit and miss, some get a unit with no noise apparently but for most the new unit has it as well.
