Web developer Jake Marsh made a nice guide on how to to activate internet tethering on the iPhone 3.0. The guide is only for those who live in US and with an AT&T contract.
How To Enable Tethering on iPhone OS 3.0 :
- Plug-in your iPhone
- Download this file , unzip it and place it somewhere easy to reach ( i.e. desktop )
- Go into iTunes, select your iPhone in the Source List on the left.
- Hold down the alt/option key (alt for PC ; option for Mac) and click “Check For Updates†– you should get a file chooser dialog.
- Find the ATT_US.ipcc file on your harddrive (Wherever you downloaded and unzipped it to), select it and click open.
- You should see a progress dialog saying “Updating Carrier Settings…â€
- Your iPhone may hang for a split second, but once its done, unlock your iPhone and go to “Settings > General > Network > Internet Tetheringâ€
- Flip the slider to on.
- If you’ve done it correctly, your iPhone will momentarily disappear from the Source List in iTunes and a new “Network Interface†dialog will appear.
- Allow it to do its thing and if everything has gone according to plan, you should be able to disconnect from all other internet sources (Wifi, ethernet, etc) and still browse around and do whatever you like.

I’m curious about something. How is the 3.0 software’s onboard tethering abilities with overheating? I use PDA Net 1.5 on my 2.2 software. I often use the USB mode to tether the 3G connection. However, after about 20-30 minutes of use the iPhone suffers with some horrible overheating which then causes the battery to discharge down to 0%. I assume the overheating of the processor causes the battery to discharge faster. even though it’s plugged in, lol. I’m scared sometimes that it will cause damage to my phone. It seems even worse when I’m using the WiFi Router mode.
So, I’m just curious if the 3.0’s onboard tethering capabilities cause the phone to overheat as well. has anyone here had the chance to use the 3.0 tethering? And if so does the iPhone overheat horribly? Inquiring minds wanna know. :)
this overheating has been a problem for some iphone users. My friends room mate had problems everytime he charged his 3g, that it would start over heating. He went to apple and they said its a defect in some iphones and they gave him a new one free from any charge.
I got this to work but now I can not get my data network to work on the phone it’s self. Does any one have any ideas?
Hmm… Unfortunately it did not work for me… not sure if it is OS 3 beta 4 that is the issue or that it is a fist gen 4 GB iphone. Any suggestions?
I am using 3.0 Beta 4 and can tether using a USB. This is how I did it: http://www.myappleguide.com/blogs/iphone-world/2280/how-tether-iphone-3g-over-att
