Dev Team: Jailbreak Firmware 3.0 is possible App Store – Metal Gear Solid Touch (First impressions)
Mar 19

os3Apple’s iPhone OS 3.0 Beta pre-installation advisory document states that once you’ve updated a device it will be in a locked state with no way of going back to an earlier firmware. Well Ralf Rottmann has tried after restoring Beta 3.0 to downgrade his 2G iPhone back to 2.0.
Check out after the break how he did it.

I’ve been able to do the following:

* Restore (not update!) to Beta 3.0
* Downgrade by restoring back to 2.0 via iTunes
* Jailbreak and unlock by using QuickPwn to custom 2.0 built
* Update (not restore) to Beta 3.0

This particular device is now running perfectly on the Beta 3.0 release with unlock working fine Cydia and Installer are obviously gone, as it has always been the case when applying updates.

To avoid confusion: I’m not aware of any solution, yet, that allows to jailbreak/unlock an iPhone running the current beta of OS 3.0. I did the following: I restored a first generation (not the 3G!) iPhone to the default Apple Firmware 2.0. I then used QuickPwn on a Mac to jailbreak and unlock. This gives me an unlocked iPhone 2G with Firmware 2.0. I then updated to the regular 3.0 Beta via iTunes.

The unlock is preserved, so the update seems to not wipe the modifications done on the 2.0 version. Effectively I’ve now got an unlocked iPhone 2G running OS 3.0 Beta. Cydia and Installer are gone (always happens during updates) but jailbroken apps still run!

i RESTORED to 3.0 on my 3g (from 2.2.1) and COULDNT do anything once was complete bc i received the “this phone is not a member of….”…so i RESTORED back to 2.2.1 directly(not 2.0 upto 2.2.1) and did absolutely NOTHING different than a normal RESTORE..(hold shift-WHILE IN DFU MODE OF COURSE! and click restore)…i got the “itune has detected an iphone in recovery mode”….shut down itunes….fired up QUICKPWN and received the Tip that says to hold down POWER **AND** HOME for ****15****seconds…NOT 14.5 or 15.5…****15****seconds…apple logo shows up then boots to an itunes activation screen NOT the DFU RECOVERY screen, started up itunes again and went straight to itunes store and was activated in 5 seconds!…hope this helps….or hasnt already been suggeted…ive always gotten tips from forums so i figured for once id return the favor—Peace

Indeed, I agree with jimmy. I upgraded to OS 3 beta 2 and of course got the “for developers only. Two days later Apple still hasn’t accepted my 99 bucks. Was unable to get my carrier back after downgrading but finally was able to get QuickPWN timed just right and yes indeedy I got iTunes activated and my device is back online with AT&T. My device went back to the 2.2.1 (5H11) and now I’m re-JB’ed
WAS freaking scary for awhile though.

So I was stupid tonight. I upgraded to 3.0 on my unlocked, jailbroken iphone3G. I’m in the process of trying (from DFU mode) to downgrade back to 2.2. I’m more concerned about the unlocked part than I am the jailbroken part. Anyway, I keep trying Jimmy’s technique above with no luck. I’m going to try a few more times then try to sleep, but any advice would be appreciated.

I’m T-mobile and in the USA and I bought the phone already unlocked. I was under the impression that the unlocking was a hardware thing, otherwise I would have done more research before going to 3.0. I hope I didn’t blow it!

                      Thanks i advance.
