The iPhone DevTeam have posted another entry on their blog, this time showing how they successfully downgraded the iPhone 3G’s baseband. This isn’t an unlock, but it’s definitely progress. Read more for the blog entry.
“This image is the “About†screen from a 3G iPhone that was bought in a store last week. As you can see the modem firmware version has been successfully downgraded to an older “beta†firmware. This is not an unlock (yet), but it is our illustration of the first progress made with regard to hacking the 3G baseband. We have accomplished this by being able to execute our own code on the baseband that allows us to circumvent security checks and flash the baseband with older, disallowed firmware. Please note this has been accomplished using software only, the iPhone 3G has not been disassembled or hardware modified in any way.”
This is definitely good news. Maybe an unlock is on the way.Â

koo.
ok this really has almost nothing to do with this but is there any way we can modify insomnia to work with appstore apps? or modify the appstore app itself?
Insomnia should work with App Store apps. All Insomnia does is keep Wi-Fi alive when the display is off.
But modifying the App Store would most likely not do anything. It’d have to be the applications themselves that are modified.
insomnia doesn’t work with that palringo IM app that came out yesterday.. When I said modify the appstore app I didn’t mean the appstore itself I meant the app we buy from it. (sorry)
Oh. Insomnia only keeps internet alive when the display turns off. It doesn’t keep apps running when you close them. The apps have to be designed to run in the background. No apps from the App Store will do this, because it’s against the rules. If an app does stay open upon exiting, Apple will not let it in the App Store.
actually braden thats untrue. it worked with all installer apps. the reason why it doesnt work with app store apps is because that functionality is specifically prohibited. such a shame, but apples rules are practically nazi like. hopefully we’ll see a solution soon
 Sorry.
I never used Insomnia on 1.1.4. I was simply going on what I remember from the description.
And yes, Apple’s rules can be pretty radical at times.
Wait, I think I was correct. Insomnia’s google code page says:
“Insomnia is an iPhone native application that, when enabled, will prevent the iPhone from sleeping, thus overriding its default behaviour. This allows background applications to continue to run and WiFi to work long after the screen has been switched off. Insomnia is useful if you are using an IM or IRC client that you wish to stay connected to receive messages while the screen is off.”
When the iPhone turns the display off after a period of time, the iPhone goes to sleep. When the iPhone goes to sleep, the Wi-Fi gets disconnected temporarily, until the iPhone is woken back up. Then the phone connects to the Wi-Fi again. Insomnia prevents the iPhone from sleeping (wifi gets disconnected) when the display turns off. This allows you to still be downloading/IMing/whatever even when the display is off.
It does not make applications run in the background when you exit out of them. That is in each applications individual coding.
it says “allows applications to run in background”.. Besides continuous wifi connection != a background running app cuz if it did it would still run when closed.
hey braden i actually dont believe i welcomed you. glad to see u on the iphonefreakz team bro
Thank you.
i went into cydia and then went into installed packages and insomnia says “allows applications to continue to run and wifi to work long after the screen has been switched off”
is that NOT true? i know the old version (1.1.4) allowed for apps to run in background but they make this one sound like it only allows them to run when screen is shut off. NOT NEARLY AS GOOD!
ANYWAY thanks for at least telling me it wont do anything to appstore apps (even though it was a huge letdown  )
yea its cause apple basically forbid that functionality to save battery, which is a shame. itshould just be an option in the app with a warning, but knowing apple its their way or get the f*ck out
any word on release date of installer yet?

Nice for 3G guys !!!
Definitely!
unlock i phone 3g without turbo sim
well yellowsnow works well with out that whole turbo sim bull…but the new baseband makes it impossible to keep the phone unlocked. if i downgrade the baseband can i still run yellowsnow on a 2.2.1 version?
Check when your phone was manufactured by looking at the 11 digit serial number located on the lower back of the phone. The first two digits are the factory ID (where it came from) and the next three are date information. The rest of the numbers are irrelevant for our purposes of downgrading.
An example would be xx832xxxxxx. The 8 represents the year 2008. This is the first good sign for your iPhone 3G, meaning that its got a higher chance of having a bootloader version 5.08. The next two numbers is the week it was created.
If you have lower than week 36, you should be fine. Week 36 is the end of September. Thanks to those who have been in touch, it seems some of you who have iPhone 3Gs from week 35 also have bootloader 5.09 which renders it non-downgradable. We recommend checking it properly using the method below or with 3G Fuzzyband Downgrader (below).
Optional: If you’re really unsure, you can use a tool to confirm your bootloader version. Download a tool called Minicom via Cydia (you need to have a jailbroken iPhone of course), then follow the simple instructions here for using Minicom
