There has been a lot of commotion regarding the app’s from McAfee. First almost everyone was convinced that the app’s where fake, but after a certain post yesterday i was 100% sure that these app’s where official. That’s why i decided to write a small review about the iVirusScan and Stinger app.
So what can i say about them?
First of all why do we need to use a antivirus on our iPhone? Personally i don’t think there will be any virusses out in the near future for the iPhone.
But what’s the number 1 medium for getting virusses?
E-mail!! And as our beloved iPhone is also a Mail client, i think that these app’s will be needed sooner or later.
One thing that we need to remember regarding these app’s are that they are still in early development.
Some features like the update function are not yet working.
McAfee also confirmed that these app’s have NOT been created with the Official SDK, so i have no idea if they are going to be supported in the future.
Ok enough mumbo jumbo, let’s have a look at the installation and functions.
1) You can find the app’s in the McAfee category in your installer.
2) Let’s start with the iVirusScan installation
3) Please reboot and then install the Stinger app.
4) Let’s run the iVirusScan first. As you will see there aren’t much options. you can look at the log-files, update (although not yet working), activate the on-access scan, and initiate a scan.
The scan workt perfect, and did find my fake Eicar virus i created.
It didn’t delete any of my Plist files either. so for me this app is working as it should be.
5) Let’s have a look at the stinger app now.
I can’t say very much about the Stinger app, it scanned my device but didn’t find any malware.
Conclusion?
The app is still in beta, but it works. As for all other sites that are reporting that the app deleted files? I didn’t notice any strange behaviour on my iPhone and i have had it running for more than 16h now.
You can install it, but for now i would wait for the official SDK release.
This little app is available in the Installer.app through the McAfee packaging source, see our sources page.
Enjoy

The update feature works just fine. I noticed that iVirusScan shows version 0.0 soon after it’s been installed, and after an update it shows 1.11.
i download Iviruscan and after that i does’t like it ..so i Uninstall it…when i done Uninstall it say ” you must restart your iphone ‘ so i restart…after that my Iphone are freezing…so my advise is that u should not download it…just my advise ..if u don’t trust wut the happpend that i got…go try to download it..
I tried the previous version (1.0a07) and uninstalled it. Uninstall was OK and after the reboot the application was gone and my iPhone worked correctly.
I’m now running the latest version and I think I’m keeping it on. I noticed a slight increase of the boot time, of the iPhone and of the apps, but only the first time you run them. After that my impression is that the thing is not even there.
I’ve tons of apps on my iPhone, downloaded from a variety of sources, and the idea of having some sort of protection doesn’t look that bad.
I fear though, that McAfee will never release this product for real.
It seem to be working fine so far. The Quarantine option seems disabled at the moment.
I confirmed that update works, mine says 1.11 too now.
I was wrong, the update functions do actually work :)
McAfee stopped the Beta program at the moment, but I heard in another forum that the latest version is available on Emule under “McAfee iVirusScan iPhone” search.
Found two pages today confirming that iVirusScan beta and Stinger beta for iPhone is finished now. http://ipkg.mcafeemobile.com/repo/iVirusScan.html
