There has been some rumoring about a anti virus app for the iPhone and iPod Touch from McAfee.
I’ve been following the discussion and some say it’s real and other say it’s fake.
I know that kapersky is already working on a good anti virus solution for our beloved devices, but i haven’ heard anything from McAfee yet.
Nevertheless, i found a new repo that supposedly contains 2 apps from MacAfee.
One program is the Antivirus and the other is McAfee Stinger.
I haven’t installed them so i can’t show you the full information.
However i can show 2 screenshots and give you the repository.
When you do chose to install these apps, remember that they come from a UNtrusted source, and that McAfee didn’t confirm they are working on a app like this.
McAfee or better said NAI has confirmed that this is totally real.
As a response i will post a full review tomorrow of the app.
The repo is = http://ipkg.mcafeemobile.com/
and here 2 screenshots (courtesy of hakcint0sh)
I have official verification that it’s real!
thanks again to the McAfee mobile team!

yo yo this is crap dude. and why on a mac system??
It is not fake at all! Just a private technology beta test which got discovered and got some publicity. If there will be a need for such product in the future it will be officially released. For now try it and let us know if you have any issues.
SHUT UP MCAFEE MOBILE, My uncle works at McAfee And he says its a fake so please stop posting, also it breaks a lot of things on the iPhone, so remove it, my uncle also says that they are thinking of legal action
Could you please send us information what exactly did it break on your phone as well as any other thoughts about this technology to info@mcafeemobile.com. Regarding your uncle, why don’t you send his name to the email above and we will sort it out. and please do not post your imagination regarding legal actions etc without having facts.
I hope this post will give you some assurance that this is authentic. Appreciate if you remove your previous post with addresses etc. feel free to send mail to address posted before.
Hey I just contacted McAfee at http://www.McAfee.com/Mobile (there’s an official contact link) and they confirmed that this is a “technology beta test”. /Z
It’s authentic, i have official verification. thanks McAfee !!!
It is real and I have proof! Check over on MMi Forums!
Is there anyway you can change the URL? It still shows fake
Guys, one of the posts from the mcafee mobile team cleary showed that hey came from within mcafee. For me this is as enough proof as you can have on the net.
Other sources have confirmed that this is a malicious application that is NOT sanctioned by McAfee. It is said to erase installer .plist files and cause the Spinning Wheel of Death.
I wouldn’t install it until there is absolute proof that this will not harm your phone.
As for me, I’m going to wait it out.
Also, I doubt a prestigious company such as McAfee would release an application for the iPhone when putting applications on the iPhone isn’t sanctioned by Apple as of now.
Also, I doubt it would be totally free.
For all the people that are still doubting.
TUAW has received an official statement that the app’s are real.
I already had official news that the app was genuine at May 2nd, 2008 at 6:34 pm ECT.
Here’s the official statement:
The application you blogged about is indeed a genuine McAfee project. We are always working on new platforms including the popular ones. In this particular case we were running a test to validate some recently developed technology. We happen to be first to test AV technology for iPhone. We’re happy that iPhone users are already getting excited about it, as evidenced by your blog and the thousands of people who are trying out the application. Still, we are not ready to announce a new product, our development work is in the early stages.
